Education & Outreach Programs
At HSHPE, we honour the special bond between humans and animals and believe those bonds enrich our lives. Our programs are aimed at helping facilitate those relationships. Our animal care education programs aim to help all of us become better pet owners, while our community programs focus on helping local residents lead happier lives and build skills and empathy by interacting with animals in our care.
In keeping with our mandate to make all of us better pet owners, HSHPE offers a number of animal care education initiatives. From in-person school and youth centre visits, to blog resources and public information campaigns, we share the latest in animal care knowledge and facilite discussions with the next generation of pet owners about the importance of human/pet relationships
Public Education Programs
Our annual No Hot Pets Program, which runs each spring and summer, aims to educate pet owners about the dangers of leaving their animals in the car during the summer months and includes radio announcements, as well as information brochures, signage and car stickers and distributed through local stores.
School Programs
We deliver program by visiting many schools in our jurisdiction or by hosting students in our shelter. These visits are conducted on request from a school or teacher. Each presentation involves taking a few animals and include a safe, hands on introduction to each pet. Some children have never had a pet due to many reasons, and love these opportunities to spend time with an animal.
Age appropriate talks regarding animal care always lead to fun questions and answer sessions.
Rescue Readers
We are proud to offer this innovative program to students in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. This Program aims to increase knowledge of animal care and the lives of pets and in our community, and supports the development of empathy and literacy.
Adult Animal Education Programs
We also offer animal care and education programs for adults, sometimes in partnership with other providers on topics such as pet care and ownership and animal first-aid.
Community Outreach Programs
Our community programs at aimed at enriching the lives of all residents of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. By bringing our animals in care out into the community, we brighten people’s days and give our animals some new socialization opportunities. By bringing people into the shelter, we help them gain new skills and empathy.
EmPEThy Pilot Program
With a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in 2020, HSHPE has been delivering special EmPEThy programs aimed at providing companionship and fostering emotional and social skills. Local at-risk youth, adolescents, adults, seniors and individuals with intellectual disabilities continue to participate in these community-based outreach programs.
